Factoring
Contracting out your sales ledger management and debt collection, usually in exchange for an advance payment. A means of raising working capital against trade debtors.
Firewall
A security barrier to prevent unauthorised access to a network or personal computer. All traffic is diverted to a proxy computer, or gatekeeper, for vetting. A hardware or software security device that blocks unwanted data and traffic to a computer network based on set security guidelines.
FireWire
Based on the IEEE 1394 standard for connecting high-speed external devices to a computer, such as video and audio-editing devices. It is a complementary technology to Universal Serial Bus, but with a higher bandwidth.
Flash
A software product that allows users to produce websites with high quality animation, graphics and interactivity. Most browsers support Flash but a Flash plug-in can be downloaded free of charge.
Flotation
Raising funds by arranging for your company's shares to be quoted on a stock exchange.
Franchising
commercial agreements that allow one business to deal in a product or service controlled by another. For example, most car manufacturers give franchises to sell their cars to local garages, who then operate using the manufacturer's brand.
Freehold
Outright ownership of a property. This type of tenure contrasts with leasehold where the leaseholder has the rights to occupy a property for a specified period of time.
FSA
Financial Services Authority.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol is the standard method by which files are uploaded to or downloaded from web space.
