Company Law

Setting up and running a company in the UK is governed by the Companies Act 1985. The act was put in place to regulate standards, it sets out the responsibilities of companies, their directors and secretaries.
There are many other regulations which affect operations within a company.

Equal Oppoutunities

It is unlawful to discriminate against an employee on the grounds of their sex, age, race, sexual orientation, in fact discrimination of any kind shpould not be tolerated as an employer. A persons nationality religion or beliefs should not affect their chances of being employed. As an employer, owner or manager you may be held responsible for any discriminatory action taken by your employees.

Employee Law

There are a number of legal obligations when it comes to paying employees. For instance, male and female employees must be paid the same and there are penalties to pay if these rules aren't met.

Health and Safety Laws

It is a legal requiement of businesses to have a good level of of health and saftey precautions in place. Employees have to have a high level of prtection whilst in the work place. Having good standards of health and safety can benefit a company.

Office of Fair Trading

The OFT is the UK's consumer and competition authority. It is set up in order to ensure markets work well for consumers and that trading practices are as fair as possible. It is headed by the Director General of Fair Trading, and one of its responsibilities is the administration and enforcement of the Consumer Credit Act 1974. The OFT are set up to protect consumers and is a non-ministerial government department.

Trading Standards

Trading Standards has responsibility for the enforcement of over 80 main acts of Parliament and approximately 1000 sets of orders and regulations made under those acts. The Trading Standards Institute is the UK government-appointed body responsible for protecting consumer's rights and enforcing related laws.
