Importing

Also read: Exporting

Importing of goods and materials from other countries is done for several reasons. It could be that such goods are just not available in this country or even if they are it can be found cheaper to buy from abroad than to obtain them here.

Considering Importing

Before you decide to import goods you should consider the following;-

  • How are you going to transport the goods, they maybe cheaper abroad but you should add on the cost of transport, storage and insurance.
  • Are the goods imported compliable with UK legislation.
  • Consider the exchange rate is always changing.
  • Do you need a license for the goods you are importing; this is your legal responsibility to find out.
  • You should find out if you will be held responsible should any of the goods you import cause any harm in any way here in the UK.
  • Being as the UK is a member of the EU, import duties will apply on any imported goods. For more information see the DTI website.
  • You will need to notify the Department of Customs and Exercise if you are going to be importing from any country outside the EC.
  • Animals, Food, Medicines and any goods that could be considered as dangerous have strict controls placed on their importation rules. Such things as diseases, endangered species, animal food products, licensing and packaging are all monitored closely.
